Reverend Vernon S. Thompson, DMin, MEd, MDiv

Vernon ThompsonReverend Dr. Vernon S. Thompson is the pastor of Morris Chapel Baptist Church in Philadelphia and a consummate and outspoken advocate for civil rights with a particular focus on making solution-based changes to support the needs of the disadvantaged. His community activism in Philadelphia and Connecticut has impacted the quality of life of countless citizens. Nationally, in addition to his Board membership with B Stigma-Free, he is on the Board of Directors of National Action Network.

Reverend Dr. Thompson’s front-line work as a marriage and family therapist, and his work with citizen re-entry, veteran, youth, and substance abuse populations, coupled with leadership roles in both the public and private sector, inform his perspective.

Reverend Dr. Thompson is a member of the Baptist Pastors and Ministers Conference of Philadelphia and Vicinity; the Pennsylvania Baptist State Convention and the National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc. Rev. Dr. Thompson’s former pastorates include Baptist churches in North Carolina and in Connecticut. He has been recognized with numerous religious and civic awards including the Citizen of the Year, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity; the Religious Service Award, NAACP and Ministerial Alliance of Bridgeport; Certificate of Achievement, Executive Leadership Series, Bridgeport; and the Crispus Attucks Service Award.

In 2005, Reverend Dr. Thompson concurrently completed a joint academic and clinical program receiving both the Doctor of Ministry degree in Marriage and Family Studies from Palmer Theological Seminary of Eastern University and a post-graduate Certificate in Marital and Family Therapy from Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia. He also earned a Masters in Special Education from North Carolina Central University; a Master of Divinity degree from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary; and a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from Livingstone College.

Reverend Dr. Thompson is married to Reverend Dr. Blonnie Thompson; they have three adult sons and one grandson.
